Vol. 210 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unofficial Strikes in Cork Port.

6.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there are any statistics relating to the incidence of unofficial strikes in the port of Cork over the last five years; and whether he will make a statement as to the effect of such strikes upon the general economy of the port.

The information available to me shows that over the past five years there were some ten unofficial strikes in the port of Cork by employees of private firms. These strikes involved a total of 1,490 workers and a loss of 5,850 man days. In addition, there were three unofficial strikes by employees of Cork Harbour Commissioners.

I am not in a position to assess the extent to which unofficial strikes may have affected the general economy of the port of Cork but any stoppage of work obviously has an adverse effect on business generally and on the business and reputation of the port in particular.
