Vol. 210 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unofficial Strikes in Cork Port.

3.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if there are any statistics relating to the incidence of unofficial strikes in the port of Cork over the last five years; and whether he will make a statement as to the effect of such strikes upon the general economy of the port.

I am informed by the Cork Harbour Commissioners that during the last five years there were three unofficial strikes by their employees; all of these took place within the past six months. The strikes resulted in the departure of a number of transatlantic liners without being serviced, the cancellation of calls by others and in delay to other shipping. The serious threat to the present trade of the port and to prospects of future expansion posed by unofficial strikes of this kind should be apparent to all concerned and I am hopeful, therefore, that the discussions now going on between the Harbour Commissioners and the unions will result in an agreement which will obviate any danger of a recurrence.
