Vol. 211 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Classes.

85.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in regard to the assessment of schools with classes of fifty pupils or over, what was the highest figure in any single class; and if he will give the number of classes with fifty pupils or over expressed as a percentage of the total number of classes.

As explained in my reply of 3rd June, the information obtained by my Department relates to the city of Dublin and to classes over 50. It did not contain details of the numbers in every class. The classes over 50 in Dublin at the time the information was collected represented 35 per cent of the total number of classes.

Does the Minister not know the highest figure?

The information was not collected on that basis. The survey was done on the basis of reducing all classes and there was not a detailed account of the exact number in each class. It was done by schools.
