Vol. 211 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. Stephen's Green Hire Seats.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the hired seats in Stephen's Green, Dublin, now cost five pence; if he will state the reason for this increase; and if he will provide immediately for a substantial amount of extra public seating for persons of limited means and for the aged who cannot afford the present exorbitant charge and whose only place of recreation is this park.

Seats are available for hire in St. Stephen's Green at a rate of 2d. for an upright chair and 5d. for a deck-chair for a period not exceeding three hours. The recent increase of a penny, that is from 4d. to 5d., in the charge for deck-chairs was allowed to the contractors operating the chair concession because of increases in wages and other costs. There is free seating in the Green for more than 600 persons. I will look into the Deputy's suggestion that additional free seating be provided and arrangements will be made for the provision of such additional seating if it is required.

It was not for the purpose of keeping it in line with the postage stamp.
