Vol. 211 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tourist Earnings.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the percentage of earnings recently announced for the tourist industry which he would attribute to emigrants returning home on holidays.

It is estimated that in 1963 visitors to Ireland spent £49.5 million within the State. Of this total £5.7 million was spent by visitors arriving direct from overseas and £43.8 million by visitors travelling via Great Britain or the Six Counties. An analysis by category of visitor is available only in respect of the latter figure. It is estimated that those travelling cross-Channel or cross-border with the objective of visiting relatives spent £11.9 million or 27.2 per cent of the total of £43.8 million.
