Vol. 211 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation for Itinerants.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he proposes to recommend to Dublin Corporation that, pending the Government's decision on the recommendations of the report of the Commission on Itinerancy, temporary accommodation and sanitary facilities be provided on the lines of the temporary caravan facilities for housing homeless persons in the city.

I do not propose to make recommendations to Dublin Corporation at the present stage in regard to caravan facilities for itinerants. The recommendation of the Commission on Itinerancy in regard to provision of caravan sites for itinerants is being considered in conjunction with the other recommendations of the Commission, and proposals in the matter must await completion of examination of the Commission's report.

What objection has the Minister to the making of arrangements for temporary facilities on the lines of the ones made in connection with the housing emergency?

It is not a question of having an objection. It is a question of dealing with the Commission's report in a comprehensive way. We will have to consider that report on a broad basis before we can do anything, but the lapse of time before we do that should not be very great.

Will it be six months, nine months or a year?

As far as the actual examination of the report is concerned, it will not exceed three months.
