Vol. 211 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Postman.

13.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state with regard to a postman at Castlemaine, County Kerry, who was suspended for six months, whether the temporary postman who replaced him during this period was satisfactory in his work; if this temporary postman had previous experience of such work; and, if so, the length of this experience.

14.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether, on the occasion of a postman at Castlemaine, County Kerry being removed from his duties following six months' suspension, the permanent postman appointed to take his place was selected by interview; if so, how the candidates for this interview were selected; whether the vacancy was advertised in any way to enable applications to be made for it; if the man appointed had any experience of the work; and, if so, what experience.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

It was necessary to find a temporary substitute at short notice for an auxiliary postman post at Castlemaine in December last pending the usual approach to the employment exchange for nominations. Nominations were subsequently sought from the employment exchange. The persons nominated were interviewed and an appointment was made to the vacancy from the list of nominees.

The temporary substitute had previous intermittent service totalling 113 days over a period of six years. His service was satisfactory. The man appointed to the vacancy had no previous experience but such experience is not essential for auxiliary postman appointments.
