45.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education the nature and extent of approaches made by his Department, and by national schools inspectors in particular, to national teachers to urge them to participate in this year's intermediate and leaving certificate examinations.

The co-operation of teachers engaged in teaching the secondary school curriculum in "secondary tops" in national schools was sought by the Department in this connection.

46.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education the teaching experience necessary to qualify as an examiner in the primary certificate examination.

It is the practice to specify five years' teaching experience as a normal requirement.

47.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education the number of national schools whose school year was shortened this year to enable their teachers to participate in the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations.

I have no information in relation to any such case.

48.

asked the Minister for Education the fees paid to each person who superintended the examinations recently set by his Department.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the sums paid to supervisors of the leaving certificate and intermediate examinations (a) for the 1963 examinations and (b) for the 1964 examinations.

A Cheann Comhairle, I propose with your permission to take Questions Nos. 48 and 49 together. The rate payable to superintendents in 1963 and 1964 was 35/- per day.
