Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Rentals.

21.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of hours the average worker in Ireland has to work to pay for one month's basic residence service for a telephone.

The current rental for a residence telephone line is £1 per month. In mid-June, 1964 the average hourly earnings of all industrial workers employed in manufacturing industries was 4s. 8.5d. This rate of earning was equivalent to £1 per 4.2 hours worked. It is estimated that the corresponding average rate of earnings in June, 1964, for male industrial workers, 18 years of age and over, was equivalent to £1 per 3.4 hours worked.
