Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Rivers.

57.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will examine the possibility of having the River Lennon, County Donegal cleaned as soon as possible in view of the widespread flooding in that area and in view of the fact that farmers have sustained heavy loss of crops in the last few months.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to his question on the 5th May, 1964, this river has been listed No. 25 on the approved priority list of minor catchments. I cannot yet say when it will be reached in the arterial drainage programme.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication as to whether it will be done within the next two, three, four, or five years?

It will not be done within the next two, three, four or five years.

Will it be done within the next ten years?

Hardly.

58.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will reconsider his decision regarding the clearing of the Burnfoot River, County Donegal in view of its bad condition and the severe flooding experienced during the summer months.

No decision has yet been taken by the Office of Public Works regarding the clearing of the Burnfoot river. A preliminary engineering inspection indicates that it will be difficult to evolve a satisfactory drainage scheme within reasonable limits of costs. The matter will be further examined but at this stage with so many urgent commitments in regard to more promising schemes, I cannot say when the investigation can be concluded.

Did the Parliamentary Secretary say "more promising schemes"?

Yes—economically feasible schemes.

It was the Shannon I was thinking of.

The Deputy need not worry. The survey of the Shannon will be started, as promised, in the spring.

One thousand men are to be employed next year.

Let us change the question.

59.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will examine the possibility of having the St. Johnston Burn, County Donegal cleaned.

This river is noted for consideration under the Intermediate Rivers Drainage Programme but I am unable to say when it will be reached.
