asked the Taoiseach the percentage of Gross National Product which was expended on (1) housing, (2) schools, (3) hospitals, and (4) sanitation in each of the years 1962-63 and 1963-64.

Data are available for the capital expenditure on (1) housing, (2) schools, (3) hospitals and (4) sanitary services. Expressed as a percentage of gross national product at current market prices the figures are:

asked the Taoiseach the percentage of the Gross National Product expended on all social services in each of the years 1953-54, 1958-59, 1960-61 and 1963-64, and the expenditure on education, health, social welfare and housing in each of those years.

The data available relate to (i) current expenditure by public authorities on educational services (including transfer payments to the household sector of the economy), (ii) net health expenditure by health authorities (including transfer payments to the household sector, but excluding capital expenditure), (iii) expenditure on social welfare services which comprises transfer payments to the household sector (old age pensions, children's allowances, etc.), (iv) capital expenditure on housing. It is not possible to make reliable estimates of private expenditure on health and education.

The following table shows the expenditure in each of the four categories as defined above, expressed as a percentage of gross national product at current market prices, in each of the years 1953/54, 1958/59, 1960/61 and 1963/64.
