Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Control.

34.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the present means of controlling traffic snarls at peak hours in Dublin city are considered satisfactory; and, if not, if he is in a position to give details of what further proposals are under consideration.

A substantial extension of the one-way streets system has been agreed to between the Garda Síochána and the Dublin Corporation and has been approved by the Minister for Local Government. The new scheme will come into operation on the 18th of this month. Details are being supplied to the newspapers and I hope that it will be possible for them to reproduce, as they did on a previous occasion, a map showing what is proposed.

The Deputy will be aware that Dublin traffic is constantly increasing and that it is very difficult to keep traffic jams from getting worse, let alone improve the position for any length of time. The problem is, however, the subject of constant consultation between the Garda Síochána and the Dublin Corporation and I understand that the Corporation expect to receive very shortly a report from a German traffic consultant who has made a survey of Dublin traffic.
