Vol. 213 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Wool.

25.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to the fall in the price of Scotch wool from 3/10d. to 3/- approximately over the past couple of weeks; and if there are any steps he can take to alleviate the burden this will impose on many sheep owners in the Galtee and Comeragh Mountains, in the Nire Valley and elsewhere, to whom wool may represent the main item of their harvest.

I am aware that due to reduced export demand the market for wool, particularly Scotch Blackface wool, has not been satisfactory in recent weeks and that prices have fallen as compared with the early part of the wool buying season and with 1963. The question of the marketing of wool is being examined at present by a committee representative of the various interests concerned in the production, handling and export of wool. The terms of reference of the committee are: To consider and recommend desirable improvements in the quality, handling and marketing of Irish wool, including the question of grading.
