Vol. 213 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment at CIE Bodybuilding Works.

5.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Transport and power if, in view of the grave fears of unemployment in the Inchicore area, he will state what proposal Córas Iompair Éireann have to protect the employment interests of the coachbuilders and other employed in the CIE bodybuilding works at Spa Road, Dublin.

I would refer the Deputy to the statement issued by CIE on 2nd December that the programme for assembling 255 single-deck buses at Spa Road which is expected to take 18 months to complete will not cause any redundancy.

I should like to draw the attention of the Chair and the Minister to the fact that this morning I gave notice that I wanted to raise this vital matter concerning the employment of over 200 men—in jeopardy by reason of the Minister's action—on the Adjournment this evening. I was informed indirectly by the Chair that he will not allow me raise this vital matter. I want to have a public statement of why I am being denied the right of voicing the legitimate grievances——

The Deputy may not canvass the rulings of the Chair in that fashion.

I am not canvassing the rulings of the Chair. I want a public statement from the Chair why he made this decision——

There is no use in the Deputy simulating anger to me in that fashion.

The Chair used that term to me before. If I wanted to simulate anger, the Chair would know all about it.

I am telling the Deputy he will not canvas my ruling in that way.

I will not take that insult from the Chair.

The Deputy will resume his seat.

I simply wanted to ask a question and get an answer.
