Vol. 213 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Average Weekly Wage.

3.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach if he will state for the latest available date the national average weekly wage.

The available particulars relate to average weekly earnings in the industrial sector only. In mid-September, 1964, the latest date for which the information has been collected, the average earnings per week for industrial workers engaged in transportable goods industries were 209s. 11d.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary not give the average of agricultural workers' wages?

They are available for industrial workers only.

Why? Is it because the Government would not go to the trouble of looking them up? They do not count. Or is it that they would look too bad?

The Parliamentary Secretary's reply was in respect of the national average weekly earnings. Could he not give it by way of wages? If there is any such figure?

I do not think so. Surely earnings are an adequate answer to the question?

We do not always get what we earn.
