Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Profit Restrictions on Milk Processing Firms.

143.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether profit restrictions have recently been imposed on milk processing firms; and, if so, if he will explain the reasons for such restrictions.

I am not aware of any recently imposed profit restrictions on milk processing firms. There are no controls on the profit margins of manufactures in relation to their sales of dairy products on the home market, the price levels of which are determined by competition. Sales of dairy products abroad involve export subsidies by An Bord Bainne and I am informed by the Board that there have been no alterations recently in the element of working profits which forms part of subsidy calculation.

My information is that a restriction has been imposed and a figure of 2½ per cent on turnover has been mentioned. Perhaps the Minister would look into the matter?

Yes, I shall, but the figure the Deputy mentions would seem to indicate that there has been no change.

I am aware of a processing plant which is was proposed to erect in the south and the whole thing has been called off because of this proposed profit restriction.

There has been no change in the percentage allowance for profit which has been fixed by Bord Bainne. If the Deputy will give me particulars of the case he has in mind, I shall look into it.
