Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Ross Development Works.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress, if any, has been made towards the development of Barrack Lane and the adjacent vacant plots in the centre of the town of New Ross, County Wexford, for which a draft scheme was submitted to his Department a considerable time ago.

As I informed the Deputy in my reply of 14th April, 1964, the New Ross Urban Council's outline proposals for the Barrack Lane area of the town fall to be dealt with under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963. The Act which came into operation on 1st October, 1964, requires each planning authority to prepare, within three years, a development plan indicating the authority's planning objectives, including objectives for the development and renewal of obsolete areas and to take steps to secure the objectives contained in its development plan. The Act provides for the carrying out of surveys and other investigations necessary for the establishment of proper objectives.

Planning authorities generally are at present being advised and assisted by my Department and An Foras For-bartha in regard to the basic planning surveys and it is the intention that the advice will be extended in due course to more detailed aspects of the approach to urban renewal and redevelopment projects.

In the meantime the outline proposals for the Barrack Lane area of New Ross are being examined with a view to advising the planning authority as to the procedures they might adopt in order to secure the redevelopment of the area in conjunction with their development plan.
