Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children of Blind Pensioners.

39.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will extend the extra allowances in respect of the children of blind fathers, effective from 1st November, to cover children under the age of sixteen years whose mothers are blind pensioners, in view of the fact that such mothers must suffer grave disadvantages in housekeeping and raising a family.

Under the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1964, allowances are provided for recipients of blind pension in respect of children for whom they are entitled to payment under the Children's Allowances Acts. I have no power to extend the allowances to other classes.

Would the Minister consider it in future legislation?

I shall consider it as soon as a suitable formula can be devised.
