Vol. 215 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Donegal River.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a considerable number of acres of arable land in the townlands of Tulloghdegley Irish and Tulloghdegley Scottish are useless as a result of flooding of the Ballina River near Falcarragh, County Donegal; and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to have the river cleaned; or alternatively, if he will make funds available to the Donegal County Council under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949 to enable them to do so.

Cleaning of the Ballina River could be carried out by the Office of Public Works only by way of a scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. The catchment has been noted for consideration under the intermediate river drainage programme but I cannot say when it may be reached.

The Office of Public Works has no function in regard to the making available of funds for the purposes of the Local Authorities Works Act, 1949.
