Vol. 215 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing for Married Army Personnel.

35.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the number of applications at present for married quarters in Dublin; the steps being taken to provide accommodation to meet the applications; and when it is expected that all current applicants will be housed.

The number of applications at present from men of na Buan-Óglaigh for married quarters in Dublin is 95.

The provision of houses for married soldiers is not primarily a matter for my Department and the most that it can hope to achieve in this direction is to supplement the efforts of local authorities at centres where the need is greatest. Soldiers are not in a different position from others in the same income group as regards their eligibility for housing by local authorities. It cannot be stated at this stage when a further scheme for the erection of new houses in Dublin will be undertaken.

As soon as existing quarters become vacant they are, of course, allocated to applicants and it is anticipated that all current applicants will be housed in two or three years.
