Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Pig Fattening Unit.

46.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider the establishment of a pig fattening unit in the same area as the Labadish potato processing factory, County Donegal in order to make economic use of the large quantity of potato pulp which is an end product of this factory.

The establishment of such a pig fattening unit is something that should be undertaken by local interests. I am not aware of any proposal from the Labadish area in the matter. Pig fattening units in other areas have been almost entirely established by co-operative societies formed in association with the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society. Pig housing grants have been given in those cases by my Department and some of the societies have also received loans from the Agricultural Credit Corporation. I am advised that while potato pulp may be used as a "filler" to pig rations it is not a balanced material and could not be regarded as suitable to form the principal ingredient of a pig ration.
