51.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each of the last five years (i) the number of convictions, (ii) the number of petitions received by him against such convictions and (iii) the number of remissions granted by him of all or any part of penalties imposed by the Courts in (a) Dublin city and county and (b) elsewhere in the State.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement, which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

NOTE.

1. The Garda statistics of crimes, including the number of convictions recorded, relate to the year ended 30th September in all cases.

2. The available statistics in relation to indictable offences do not distinguish between (a) persons who were convicted and (b) persons in respect of whom a charge was held proved and an order made by the Court without conviction. The table in the answer relating to indictable offences refers, accordingly, to the total of these two categories in each case.

3. The tables of convictions distinguish between the Dublin area and the rest of the State. For the years prior to 1964 the Dublin area is the former Dublin Metropolitan Garda Division, which was roughly equivalent to the County Borough of Dublin plus the Borough of Dún Laoghaire. The corresponding figures for 1964 refer to a new police area, known as the Dublin Metropolitan Area, which extends to most of County Dublin and part of County Wicklow.
