Vol. 216 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions for Widowers.

32.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange to provide pensions for widowers as well as widows as such pensions would be of considerable assistance to many of those men who have large families.

I would point out to the Deputy that the object of the existing widows' and orphans' pensions scheme is the assistance of families which have been left without a breadwinner. The same need cannot be said to exist in the case of families where it is the mother who has died. In the circumstances the answer to the Deputy's question must be in the negative.
