Vol. 216 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Housing.

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the total number of dwelling under construction by Dublin Corporation, excluding dwellings in the Ballymun area which are being built by the National Building Agency, and the total acreage of land on which these dwellings are being constructed, (b) the total acerage of land which has been acquired by the Dublin Corporation for house building purposes, excluding the land referred to at (a), on which development work is being carried out at present, (c) the total acreage of land, other than that referred to at (a) and (b) above, that the Corporation has acquired for housing purposes, and (d) the total acreage of land, other than that referred to at (a), (b) and (c) above, that the Corporation is seeking to acquire by negotiation or by compulsory purchase order procedure.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether the Dublin Corporation has sufficient land on which to construct the 15,000 dwellings which has been repeatedly stated to be the number needed to deal with the housing problem in Dublin; and if he will state the estimated number of dwellings, including those under construction at present, which can be built on the land in the possession of Dublin Corporation or in respect of which negotiations or compulsory purchase orders are at present in process or contemplation.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

The short term housing needs of Dublin city have been estimated at 10,000 dwellings with the prospect of a continued high level of demand in the longer term to meet the further needs likely to arise from obsolescence and new family growth. Dublin Corporation have contracts at present for 1,980 dwellings on an estimated 177 acres. Development work is in progress on an estimated 80 acres. The corporation has acquired an additional 580 acres, approximately, for further building and are taking steps to acquire another 200 acres.

Sites on hands or in course of acquisition will, therefore, provide for about 10,000 dwellings apart from the 3,000 dwelling project at Ballymun.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government how many families of (a) six and (b) five in one room remain to be housed in Dublin city; and when he anticipates that these families will be housed.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is expected that housing can be provided by Dublin Corporation for families of (a) four persons and (b) three persons.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 15 and 16 together.

I understand that Dublin Corporation have on their approved waiting list 210 families of six persons in one room and 825 families of five persons in one room. The corporation are at present rehousing families in these categories, but are unable to indicate precisely when all the families will have been rehoused.

With regard to the rehousing of smaller families, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of 5th May, 1965, on the subject.
