Vol. 216 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Participation in Dairying Industry.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his attention has been drawn to a recent statement by the newly elected President of the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society in which he expressed concern about the increasing participation of foreign interests in this country's dairying industry; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in the course of an address I gave at University College, Cork, on 15th February, 1965, I would like to see our own creamery industry taking responsibility for new processing projects but we have to be practical in our approach to this problem of foreign participation. Each case must be decided on its merits. For example, where a reputable foreign concern with considerable technical know-how and established export markets is interested in establishing a processing industry with the support of local creameries, and the proposal is entirely acceptable on all other grounds, I do not think we should turn it down.
