asked the Minister for Social Welfare when it is proposed to provide pensions for social welfare officers, at present known as local agents of his Department, dealing with the payment of social welfare benefits who are not at present pensionable and permanent officers; if he will arrange for the grant of a lump sum to each of those officers on retirement; and if he will make a statement in regard to the manner in which he proposes to help such persons who have given long years of devoted service to his Department.

As I have stated in reply to previous questions on this subject, there are in all 264 posts of agent in my Department, of which only 43 are full-time pensionable posts. The remaining 221 are part-time understablished posts the holders of which are not eligible for pensions or gratuities under the superannuation code. It is not proposed to alter this position.
