Vol. 216 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Laois Coal Mines.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make special grants available for the Mayo, Doonane and Crettyard areas of County Laois where great unemployment exists owing to the closing of local coal mines; and if in the special circumstances of the case emergency employment schemes will be undertaken so that work may be available for the many unemployed in the district.

It is not proposed to make special employment schemes grants for the areas referred to. The funds provided for employment schemes in the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote are reserved for the annual programme of winter employment schemes and the grants are related to the number of unemployment assistance recipients in each qualifying area.
