Vol. 217 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Connacht Swimming Pools.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the recent statement issued by the swimming clubs affiliated to the Connacht branch of the Irish Amateur Swimming Association to the effect that he should increase forthwith the Government contributions towards the provision of swimming pools in the Western counties from the existing 50 per cent to at least 80 per cent; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the suggestion referred to by the Deputy and I am prepared, in exceptional cases, for example in areas where the rates are unusually high, to make subsidy available to local authorities at a rate not exceeding 60 per cent, in respect of swimming pool projects. Each proposal will have to be examined on its merits. I have, in fact, already approved of subsidy at the rate of 60 per cent in the case of one local authority in a western county. I should hope, however, that my recent offer to make indoor heated swimming pools available at low cost will be of greater significance in promoting the provision of swimming pools than such increase in subsidy as may be forthcoming in exceptional cases.
