Vol. 217 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Costs of Unemployment.

51.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the average cost to public funds of each 1,000 men who are unemployed, such costs to include if possible, (a) unemployment assistance, (b) home assistance and (c) administrative costs.

The best figure I am in a position to give, in so far as my Department is concerned, for the average cost requested is £257 per day. This figure, which relates to the year ended 31st March, 1965, represents the average daily expenditure falling on the Exchequer per 1,000 recipients of unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance taken together, after allowing for the fact that approximately two-thirds of the cost of unemployment benefit is borne on the contributions of insured persons and their employers.

A corresponding figure related to men only is not available. Particulars of the cost of home assistance are not available in respect of unemployed persons, nor is it feasible to break down the costs of administration in the manner desired in the question.
