Vol. 217 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Social Welfare Payments.

53.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that, in many Dublin suburban post offices in districts with a high density of social welfare and children's allowances, many pensioners and beneficiaries prefer the expense and discomfort of travelling to remote post offices to obtain payment without long periods of waiting; if he will introduce a mode of payment which will obviate the need of personal attendances at post offices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that the position is as stated by the Deputy. I am satisfied that the present method of payment of social welfare pensions and allowances is working satisfactorily and I do not propose to introduce any changes.

Is the Minister aware that in such places as Ballyfermot recipients of allowances have sometimes to wait as long as two hours for payment of their allowances on the particular day on which they are issued? Having regard to the hardship involved, would the Minister reconsider his decision?

No. I am not aware that there is any hardship involved or that any difficulties arise.

Am I to assume then that the Minister does not consider it a hardship on mothers of young families to have to wait for hours in suburban post offices, or else take a bus to some remote place in order to obtain speedy payment of their allowances, because that is what is happening?

I am not aware it is happening?

I suggest the Minister inquires at a place in which he has certain contacts.
