Vol. 217 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Corporation Road Grants.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received from Clonmel Corporation a motion requesting that main road grants for the Clonmel borough area be paid direct to the corporation rather than to the county council; if so, at what date he received such motion, at what date he acknowledged receipt of it, and when he expects to come to a decision in the matter; and whether he will receive a deputation from Clonmel Corporation to discuss the matter.

A request from the Clonmel Corporation on the lines in question was dated 30th July, 1964, but it was not indicated specifically that it was by way of motion by the corporation. The request was not acknowledged while it was under examination, but when the corporation renewed their representations they were informed on 2nd March, 1965, that the matter was receiving consideration. The proposal was subsequently discussed at a meeting between the county manager and officials of my Department. Following on this discussion, I am communicating my views on the matter to the corporation. I do not consider it would be useful to meet a deputation from the borough council at this stage because no question of allocation of a main road improvement grant to any road authority can arise until the allocations for 1966-67 come up for consideration at the end of the year. I am, however, prepared to consider any specific representations which the corporation may make to me as to the use, where appropriate, of Road Fund moneys in the redevelopment of the borough area under the Planning and Development Act.

When may the corporation hope to receive the communication from the Minister?

It is probably on its way to them at the moment. I have cleared it, anyway.
