Vol. 217 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Notification of Stillbirths and Miscarriages.

60.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider directing that the notification of the occurrence of stillbirths and miscarriages be made obligatory.

Mr. O'Malley

Under the Vital Statistics (Foetal Deaths) Regulations, 1956, the notification of foetal deaths occurring after twenty-eight weeks of pregnancy is at present obligatory. Miscarriages, that is losses occurring before the end of the twenty-eighth week of pregnancy, are not notifiable and I am advised that it would be neither practicable nor necessary to make their notification obligatory.
