Vol. 217 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Growth of Bank Resources.

3.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will specify the causes for the slow rate of growth of resources of the banks in recent times; whether he proposes to take any steps to reverse this trend; and, if so, the nature and timing of such steps.

The main factors affecting the growth of bank resources this year have been the rise in the trade deficit and the reduction in the net inflow of capital.

As regards steps to deal with the situation, I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave on 29th June to a question about the position disclosed by the recent trade returns.
