Vol. 217 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decimal Currency.

1.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position relating to the proposed adoption of a decimal currency system, and, particularly, whether this country will adopt the same basis for a decimal system as is proposed in Britain; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Report of the Working Party on Decimal Currency was published on 21st May, 1965. The Working Party was set up to advise on the appropriate time for adopting a decimal system of currency and on the steps necessary to effect the change in the most economical way.

The views of Government Departments are being sought on the conclusions and findings in the Report. Other interested parties also have the opportunity now of furnishing comments. In the light of the Report and the views which are received, I propose in due course to submit the matter for a decision by the Government.

As to the position in Britain, I am not aware of any final decision regarding the introduction of a decimal system there or what particular system may be adopted. Any decision taken in Britain will, of course, be taken into account.

I take it the Minister is aware there was a recommendation that the system be based on a £1 while another recommended it should be based on 10/-. Have the Government yet taken a decision as to what the basis will be?
