Vol. 217 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Guidance Booklet for Emigrants.

6.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will have a booklet prepared setting out information and guidance, which might be available and issued free at points of emigration.

In the case of persons going to employment in European countries for which passports are required, the Passport Office of my Department inserts in the passport a leaflet giving the addresses of Irish diplomatic and consular missions in case their assistance should be required by the intending emigrant. For countries overseas such a notice has not proved to be necessary.

In the case of Great Britain, for which passports are not required by Irish citizens, there is no ready means of picking out emigrants at the points of departure from the many other travellers continuously passing between the two countries.

However, the Department of External Affairs and the Irish Embassy in London gladly give advice, information and addresses if approached by or on behalf of emigrants or intending emigrants as to how they should go about seeking help in Britain in case they wish to obtain it. In addition there are, apart from religious bodies, many Irish organisations ready and willing to give help and guidance to emigrants.
