Vol. 217 No. 9

Written Answers. - Employment Period Orders.

58.

asked the Taoiseach how many Employment Period Orders are now in operation and the period covered by each such Order; and by how many persons does the live register on average decline through the operation of such Order.

Two Employment Period Orders (a) the Unemployment Assistance (Employment Period) Order covering the period 10th March, 1965 to 2nd November, 1965 and (b) the Unemployment Assistance (Second Employment Period) Order, 1965 covering the period 9th June, 1965 to 2nd November, 1965 are now in operation. As factors, other than the operation of the Orders, affect the numbers on the live register, it is not possible to determine what changes in the numbers of those on the live register are ascribable to the operation of the Orders. It may be noted, for instance, that a number of the persons who are precluded from the receipt of unemployment assistance by the Orders continue to register and are included in the total live register figure in the category "Others", i.e. persons other than claimants to unemployment benefit or applicants for unemployment assistance. However, as an indication of the changes resulting from the operation of these Orders it may be noted that between 5th and 12th March, 1965 the number of applicants for unemployment assistance assessed with means declined by 2,656 and those without means by 89 while the figure for the category "Others" rose by 2,312. Similarly between 4th and 11th June the number of applicants for unemployment assistance assessed with means declined by 5,926 and those without means by 825 while the figure for the category "Others" rose by 4,419.
