Vol. 217 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Probation Officers.

19.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider appointing a probation officer for each county or such other geographical unit as such an officer could effectively supervise.

The plans for the reorganisation and development of the services concerned with the work of probation provide for a general survey of probation needs by the Probation Administration Officer. I will give careful consideration to the recommendations of the Administration Officer for the more effective supervision of any particular centre or area.

(Cavan): Does the Minister agree that the reformation of delinquents, and especially juvenile delinquents, is being seriously handicapped at the moment by the absense of probation officers throughout the country?

A probation administration officer was appointed last year. So far, he has concentrated his attention on the Dublin area and I am awaiting recommendations from him as to the reorganisation of the probation system in the country areas.
