Vol. 217 No. 11

Additional Estimate. - Vote 16—Law Charges.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £145,000 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1966, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Office of the Attorney General, etc., and for the Expenses of Criminal Prosecutions and other Law Charges, including a Grant in Relief of certain Expenses payable by Statute out of Local Rates.

Would the Minister indicate the scale of charges payable to a prosecuting counsel acting for the Attorney General in criminal or civil cases? Is there a scale laid on for senior and junior counsel?

The fees payable are measured by reference to the importance of each case and are normally settled by the Attorney General who has delegated authority to authorise the payment of such fees as he may consider appropriate, within a limit of 75 guineas on the brief. The fees in ordinary cases average about 17 guineas for senior counsel and 12 guineas for junior counsel.

Per diem or per brief?

Per brief.

Vote put and agreed to.
