Vol. 217 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Assessments.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons assessed for income tax under each of the following classifications: (1) property owners and householders, (2) occupiers of land, (3) persons and companies engaged in trades and professions, and (4) wage and salary earners and pensioners; and the total amount collected under each heading last year.

Income tax statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable a reply to be given under the headings set out in the Deputy's question. The number of persons, including companies, effectively liable to income tax for 1964-65 was approximately 392,000. Of these about 340,000 were individuals whose main source of income was within Schedule E. The net receipt of income tax for that year was £45,234,000, of which approximately £22,500,000 was from persons whose main income arose under Schedule E.
