Vol. 217 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Accommodation.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance in respect of the accommodation previously occupied by civil servants who now, or will shortly, occupy offices in O'Connell Bridge House, by whom it will be occupied; and whether any buildings occupied by civil servants will be sold or surrendered as a consequence.

The reply to the first part of the question is in the form of a statement which, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated in the Official Report.

In regard to the second part of the question, two buildings have already been surrendered and a third will be surrendered shortly. The future of a fourth building has still to be decided on.

I am not sure I heard the Parliamentary Secretary correctly. Did I understand him to say the first part of the reply was in the form of a statement which he was putting into the Official Report?

Surely these statements ought to be made in the House?

It is a very long statement.

We are not even informed that it is a tabular statement. This practice of concealing information is an undesirable one and an unfair one, particularly during the printers' strike and when the Dáil is going into recess.

It is not a question of concealing information. It is merely that the reply is long and cumbersome and is best handled in a tabular statement.

While the argument is going on, it could be read out.

The other 142 Deputies are entitled to get it the same as myself.

Deputies

They will get it.

A Deputy

When it is printed.

(Interruptions.)

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell us what Department is going into the O'Connell Bridge building?

Miss Cossie.

I cannot say.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say how many people are to be accommodated in this building and at what cost?

That is a separate question.

That is a completely different question and has no relation at all to the question asked.

It seems to be a very embarrassing question.

It does not embarrass me in the slightest.

It is not the Parliamentary Secretary who, I fear, may be embarrassed.

There is a special room in it for Major Gardner, too.
