Vol. 217 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fermoy TV Reception.

67.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the very poor reception of Telefís Éireann obtained by viewers in the town of Fermoy over the past three years; and if he will take steps to improve the position.

As soon as the five main television transmitter stations were in full operation, the Broadcasting Authority carried out surveys to locate areas in which reception of Telefís Éireann was inadequate. Plans were subsequently made to provide 13 satellite transposers in areas where the surveys showed that they were essential. Some of these transposers have already been brought into operation and it is hoped that the remainder will be provided by the end of the present year. The Authority realises that, inevitably, there will still be small pockets of poor reception, like part of the town of Fermoy. Disproportionately heavy expenditure would be involved in filling in many of these small areas at this stage but the Authority intends to review the whole position when the present satellite transposer programme has been completed.
