Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Abortion Tests

139.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that cows will not be accepted by the Six County Department of Agriculture if certificates of clear tests from abortion are not produced, and that as a result farmers in Donegal are suffering considerable loss; and if he will immediately introduce the abortion tests in Border counties.

There is no obstacle to the entry of cattle from County Donegal into Northern Ireland, provided they are Blue Card animals under the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Scheme. There are, of course, special regulations governing the entry of animals to herds participating in the Brucellosis (Certified) Herd schemes in Northern Ireland.

As I have already announced, it is proposed to initiate a brucellosis eradication scheme, commencing with Donegal and some other western counties, as soon as the necessary legislation at present before the Dáil is enacted.
