Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Prices.

142.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that the drop in cattle prices is causing considerable anxiety and a certain amount of panic; and, if so, if he can indicate the outlook for the cattle trade in the coming months.

143.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (a) the reason for the drop in the price of cattle recently, and (b) when the producers can hope to get a better price.

With your permission, a Leas-Cheann Chomhairle, I propose taking Questions 142 and 143 together.

Fluctuation in cattle prices, which have of course been at high levels for over a year past, is a usual feature of the trade and there is also a seasonal fall at this time of year. Prices here are mainly determined by the prices obtained in Britain, where average market returns still continue to be above the level at which guarantee payments arise. My information suggests that no early change in this position is likely and that the outlook for the trade is basically good.

Does the Minister not admit that at present cattle are selling at £1 per cwt less than this time 12 months?

I should like to see them making better prices.

Does the Minister admit they are selling at £1 per cwt less than a year ago, while everyone else's income is increasing rapidly?

I admit there is a seasonal fall.

I am talking about this time 12 months. There must be some other reason for it.
