Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Bridge.

44.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to the grave apprehension with which large numbers of Cork citizens view the use of Parnell Bridge in its present condition, he will take every step to ensure that the new bridge will be constructed as soon as possible.

A public local inquiry into the Cork Corporation's application for a bridge order for the replacement of Parnell Bridge was opened in the City Hall, Cork, on 23rd March, 1965, and was adjourned because of insufficient information to enable the inspector to arrive at a firm recommendation on the merits of the application. The corporation are having traffic investigations made to supply the required information. The application will be given further consideration immediately the corporation's report on these investigations reaches me.

As regards the conditions of the bridge, my information is, as previously conveyed to the Deputy, that the bridge itself is structurally sound. I understand also from the corporation that recent repairs carried out on the bridge deck have effected an improvement in the riding surface.
