Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply Schemes.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the up-to-date position regarding the implementation of the Burncourt piped water supply scheme, County Tipperary.

Examination of contract documents submitted by Tipperary (SR) County Council for this scheme has been deferred, pending receipt of a report from the county medical officer of health regarding the location of the proposed intake.

53.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the up-to-date position regarding the Emly regional piped water supply scheme, County Tipperary.

I have already approved of contract documents for Stage I of this scheme. I understand that Tipperary (S.R.) County Council are awaiting the preparation of the bill of quantities by their consulting engineer prior to advertising the scheme for tender.

54.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of each proposal in his Department for group water supply schemes in (a) Laois and (b) Offaly which is awaiting sanction.

A summary statement of the current position of these schemes is being prepared and will be forwarded to the Deputy.

55.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give immediate approval for a group water supply for Acragar, Mountmellick, County Laois; and if he will deal with this proposal as one of urgency.

This scheme is in its initial stages. Survey sheets have been received from the promoter and a preliminary inspection will be made within a few weeks.

56.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will approve of the group water supply scheme for the village of Emo, County Laois, without delay.

I understand that the group employed an engineer some months ago to prepare the necessary design for this scheme. Approval cannot be given until the design has been received for examination.

57.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work on the Inishbofin, County Galway, water scheme will commence.

I am not in a position to say when work on this scheme will commence. I understand that the preparation of final plans for the scheme is being given priority by Galway County Council.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the up-to-date position regarding the Dundrum regional piped water supply scheme, County Tipperary.

59.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government if he will explain the delay in sanctioning the Dundrum regional water supply scheme contract No. 2 which was requested from him by Tipperary South Riding County Council on 31st August 1965.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 58 and 59 together.

I approved of tenders for contracts 1 and 2 of this scheme on 11th October, 1965. Tenders for contract 3 of the scheme are at present under examination in my Department.

60.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will explain the cause of the delay regarding the Fanad regional water scheme, County Donegal.

This scheme which has been under consideration by the county council over many years was approved in principle by my Department on 19th April, 1962 and contract documents were approved on 8th March, 1963.

Tenders were submitted to my Department on 9th April, 1965, and following correspondence with the county council a tender was approved on 28th July, 1965, and a contract will be signed at an early date.

Is the Minister aware that the contractor is anxious to get on with the work? He has approached the Donegal county manager to sign the contract documents but the manager has refused or declined to do so until the Department sanction the money.

The Deputy will find that any difficulties there may have been about the signing of the contract are cleared up or about to be cleared up.

I have no doubt about the signing of the documents, but is the Minister aware that the county council applied to the Department for money, that the contractor is anxious to get on with the work, that the county council are anxious to let him go ahead, but that the manager has declined until he gets a decision from the Department that the money is available?

That is not the way it was put to me but it could very well be the way it was put to Deputy Harte. Any difficulties in regard to the actual signing of the contract, he can take it, have been got over. The contract is signed or about to be signed.

(South Tipperary): What about the money?

When did the county council apply to the Department for the money?

They applied for sanction to their loan before they had contract or tender documents submitted to the Department, which was last May or April.

Has the Minister sanctioned that loan?

The Minister has sanctioned it?

The county council can now go ahead.

If they cannot, I should like the Deputy to let me know why not.

The Minister has plenty of contacts in the council without soliciting my help.

61.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the Coughlanstown extension to the Ballymore Eustace water supply submitted by the Kildare County Council will be sanctioned by him.

Proposals for this extension have been fully approved by me and I understand that work is at present in progress.

62.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the present position regarding the proposed water schemes at Kilbehenney, Herbertstown, Doon and Oola, County Limerick; and when work will commence on each scheme.

I approved of a preliminary report for Kilbehenney water supply scheme on 17th June, 1965.

No proposals for the provision of water supplies for Herbertstown or Doon have been submitted to my Department by Limerick County Council.

I approved of contract documents for Oola water supply scheme on 25th May, 1965.

I am not in a position to state when work on these schemes will commence.

63.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the present position regarding the extension of the water scheme to (a) Coolicka, Ballykerrick, Mountaggart and Kilmartin, Donoughmore, County Cork, (b) Ballygerrihy and Knock-rourke, Donoughmore, County Cork and (c) Killeen and Derry, Donoughmore, County Cork.

I understand that the Killeen and Derry areas are included in the proposed Coachford regional water supply scheme which I approved in principle on 20th July last. No proposals have been received in my Department from Cork County Council for water supply extensions to the other areas mentioned.
