Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Flood Damage.

74.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is proposed to pay compensation to the people of County Donegal who suffered severe damage as a result of the recent flooding in the county.

I understand that a detailed survey and assessment of the damage caused by the recent floods in County Donegal is being made by the county council and the county committee of agriculture and that the county council, in co-operation with various voluntary organisations, have provided immediate relief to families affected.

I note from press reports that the county council have been asked by the county committee of agriculture to send a deputation to the Government asking for priority in repairing breaches in the rivers Finn and Lennon and to have the drainage of these rivers expedited.

In so far as my Department is concerned, I shall be prepared to consider any proposals submitted by the county council for applying Road Fund grants towards meeting the cost of repair works on roads and bridges damaged by the floods. Applications for grants under the Housing (Loans and Grants) Act, 1962, in respect of repairs necessary to houses damaged by the floods will also be sympathetically considered.
