Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Assessment of Redundancy.

115.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has assessed the redundancy that would occur in conditions of free trade (a) with Great Britain and (b) with EEC countries; and what provisions he intends to make for re-employment of persons displaced from their normal way of life.

The Second Programme for Economic Expansion is based on the assumption that by 1970 trade between this country, Britain, and the European Economic Community will be substantially free and it envisages that, in these conditions, the total number employed in industry in 1970 will be 78,000 more than in 1960. The Government's proposals for dealing with redundancy that may occur in particular industries are contained in the recently issued White Paper on Manpower Policy.

The assumption in the Minister's reply is that we will be able to get an extra 15,000 new jobs per year between this and 1970.

Taken in conjunction with the fact that there will be 60,000 fewer employed in agriculture.

We will have to provide 15,000 new jobs per year between this and 1970.

We have left ourselves in such a state now that, in order to attain the target, we will have to have 15,000 new jobs per year.

Wishing on a star.
