Vol. 218 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Calved Heifer Subsidy.

22.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will state for how long the subsidy for calved heifers will be continued.

The object of the Scheme of Grants for Calved Heifers is to encourage farmers to keep additional heifers for breeding so that the national output of cattle will reach by 1970 the target of 1,500,000 set in the Second Programme for Economic Expansion. To achieve this object the country's cow population will need to have increased to 1,700,000 by 1968, that is, 377,500 more than in 1963.

Although cow numbers had reached 1,537,000 by June, 1965, an increase of 214,000 over the 1963 figures, the target has not yet been reached and, accordingly, no date has been set for the termination of the scheme. If, at any time, it is decided to bring the Scheme to an end, adequate notice will be given to producers.

God be with the time when you were cutting their throats.

I never cut anybody's throat, although I frequently felt like it.
