Vol. 218 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Siting of Dublin Car Park.

26.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is planned to site a car park in Northumberland Square, Dublin for the new Abbey Theatre; and whether he is aware that houses in the Square are of sound structure.

This is a matter for Dublin Corporation, and in fact there are no effective proposals before me on the subject. The draft planning scheme prepared by the corporation under the Town and Regional Planning Acts, 1934-1939, provided for the reservation of Northumberland Square as a site for a car park. I understand that the car park was intended for use by the public, at all times, and was selected because of its central location and not because of its proximity to the new Abbey Theatre.

I understand that it was not intended that the site should be acquired for use as a car park in the immediate future. I have no information on the structural condition of the houses on the site.
