Vol. 218 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - United Ireland Association.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he has received a copy of three resolutions passed at the annual conference of the United Ireland Association; whether he intends to take any action on the suggestions contained in these resolutions that the Mansion House Committee be reformed and that there should be closer co-operation between all Irish nationalist Parties for the furtherance of a united Ireland; and, if so, what action.

I have received a copy of the resolutions referred to.

Neither the Government nor the Taoiseach has any responsibility for the Committee of the Mansion House All-Party Anti-Partition Conference.

I would, of course, be prepared to consider any suggestions which the political Parties wish to make on closer co-operation to foster the unity of Ireland.

It is appreciated that the Taoiseach and the Government have no responsibility for this or any other organisation. I do not think the request contained in the resolutions was unusual from this particular association. I wonder would the Taoiseach say whether or not he has communicated with the association on these three resolutions and has he offered any comment?

I have certainly acknowledged receipt of their communication but I have not replied in any detail. I am not a member of this committee and, while I believe it is still theoretically in existence, I am not sure of its function.

You might be quite sure it is not functioning.

I gather there is no intention to reform it constitutionally.

Not unless there is some work for it to do.
